New Mexico State University is gearing up to host an exciting and educational event titled “Physics Fun Day” on March 22. The event, organized by the Physics Graduate Student Organization (PGSO), aims to engage the public in hands-on physics experiments and demonstrations.

“‘Physics Fun Day’ is the fusion of learning and laughter,” said Binisha Marahatta, president of PGSO. “Our physics fun day promises to be an unforgettable experience that will leave attendees inspired and eager to delve deeper into the mysteries of the things around us.”

The event will feature various interactive experiments and captivating demonstrations, making physics accessible to individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Prakash Timsina, vice-president of PGSO, highlighted the importance of showcasing the fun and practical applications of physics to attract a broader audience to the department.

“Involving younger generations in campus events fosters a sense of community and encourages collaboration between students of different ages and backgrounds,” Timsina added.

The event not only benefits the community but also serves as a valuable learning experience for the graduate students involved. Timsina emphasized that organizing and participating in such events allow students to develop essential skills in science communication, public outreach, leadership, and teamwork.

Jonathan Cook, the Interim Department Head of Physics, praised the efforts of the graduate students, stating, “It’s a great service by the physics graduate students to the Las Cruces and NMSU community and its students, inspiring the next generation of New Mexicans to pursue education in science and become the future leaders of physics research and application.”

The ultimate goal of “Physics Fun Day” is to inspire curiosity and exploration of the natural world among children. Vassili Papavassiliou, a physics graduate advisor and professor, expressed hope that the event will encourage more youngsters to pursue a life of scientific inquiry.

The event, now in its 15th year, welcomes members of the community, including schools and the general public, to experience the wonders of physics through engaging demonstrations. From creating ice cream with liquid nitrogen to experimenting with electrostatic charges, attendees are promised an informative and entertaining day filled with scientific discoveries.

The collaborative effort between NMSU physics graduate students and local schools to provide specific time slots for students to experience the demonstrations together underscores the importance of early exposure to STEM fields.

“Physics Fun Day” not only benefits the attendees but also enriches the educational experience for everyone involved, fostering a love for science and inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators.

The event is a testament to the dedication of the NMSU physics graduate students in promoting science education and creating a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas among individuals of all backgrounds and ages.
